The Islands:
Tourist Information:
lthough when most people think of the big island of Hawaii, they think of Oahu with Honolulu, the Big Island is dubbed so because of actual size. The newest of the Hawaiian islands, and still gorwing, The Big Island is home to the world's most active volcano, which constantly purs lava down its slopes and into the ocean adding acres of land to the island every year. The Big Island's two side are very different; the Kona-Kohala coastal area on the island's westside is known for its sunny days and dry landscapes while Hilo, the rainiest city in the United States, on the island's eastside is overgrown with lush green wilderness.

With the most active volcano in the world, many visitors come to the Big Island of Hawaii to marvel at the steaming caldera and hope for the chance to glimpse flowing lava. However, Volcanoes National Park offers much more...hike through hardened lava fields, explore lava tubes, gape into fissures in the earth. There's even a hotel with panormic views of the volcano. The Big Island is though to be the first place the Polynesians landed when they originally jouneyed to Hawaii in the 8th century and was the birthplace of Kamehameha who would eventually unite the Hawiian islands into the Kingdom of Hawaii. As such, the island contains many culturally and historically significant sites, like the City of Refuge and King Kamehameha's personal temple. The Big Island of Hawaii is filled with a wide variety of attractions. To get a taste of the island's agricultural history visitors can tour one of Kona's famous coffee plantations or head out by horse at Parker Ranch. The sunny west coast offers great water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving or kayaking or swim with the dolphins at Waikoloa Village. The island's lush east coast offers hiking to a number of exquisite waterfalls and popular Waipio Valley.
