The most popular activity in Lanai is a game of golf at one of the island's two world-class 18-hole resort courses. A note to those on a budget, Lanai also has Hawaii's only free golf course, a nine-hole course that is played by donation only. The waters around Lanai are famous for spinner dolphins, in fact many of Maui's day cruises go there for that alone, so the snorkeling and scuba diving here are fantastic. To get off-the-beaten-path on Lanai requires a 4-wheel drive. Scenic drives include Road to the Garden of the Gods and the Munro Trail. Lanai was once known for its pineapple production rather than tourism. In the early 1900s after several failed indsutries same and went, Dole Pineapple set up shop on Lanai. The company dredged harbors, built roads, added water infrastructure and built Lanai City. The pineapple industry flourished until later in the century when pineapples gave way to tourism. Located about 10 miles off the coast of Maui and with easy air and sea connections, Lanai can be a good add-on for a multi-island itinerary. The best way to get to the island is by ferry. Expeditions runs between Maui and Lanai five times a day and riders often spot dolphins and whales (in the winter) on the trip. Island Air also offers seven flights a day between Lanai City and Honolulu.
