| Although there are a variety of guesthouses in the hill country and lots of condos in Kihei on Maui's south shore, Kaanapali Beach on Maui's west shore is by far the most popular place for tourists to stay. Maui's center point, Haleakala Crater, is one of the world's largest dormant volcanos, and offers loads of hiking trails and dramatic sunrise vistas. Other land options include the famous Road to Hana, one of the most spectacular drives in Hawaii. The road winds its way along Maui's north shore, snaking along tall sea cliffs and into lush green valleys dotted with tropical flowers and waterfalls. Continuing past Hana, Oheo Gulch is home to a series of waterfalls. The vineyards in Maui's central hill country, like Tedeschi Vineyard, also make for good exploring. | Maui is lined with some of Hawaii's most spectacular beaches, many of which offer calm waters for snorkeling and kayaking. Some with bigger waves for surfing and kiteboarding. Companies like Pacific Whale Foundation also offer day cruises to some fantastic snorkeling spots. Or for an evening cruise, sailboats like Trilogy leave for sundet cruises right off the beach in Kaanapali. To learn more about life under the waves, Maui Ocean Center has great exhibits on marine life. | Once the seat of Maui royals, Lahaina is best known for its more recent history, in which missionaries, whalers and plantation owners struggled for power. The Banyan Tree Square is the center of town and offers many historically significant sites. For an interesting tour of Maui's sugarcane past, the Sugar Cane Train runs between Lahaina and Kaanapali. Or attend one of Maui's many luaus for a taste of Polynesian culture and a taste of native Hawaiian foods. |
