ff-the-beaten-path for most tourists, Molokai is easily accessible and offers visitors a glimpse of what Hawaii was like before the peak of its tourism hey-day. Molokai is filled with natural attractions for the visitors willing to take the time to explore. Located just over 10 miles from Maui, Molokai makes a great stop in a multi-island itinerary with frequent water and air connections. Most tourists come as a day trip from Maui to explore the Kalaupapa Peninsula, but if you have a couple days, Molokai has much more to offer.

Molokai offers visitors a wide range of attractions and activities. many tourists come to explore the Kalaupapa peninsula (see right), but there is much more to see on this island. Halawa Valley makes a good day trip for some hiking and a picnic. The high winds on Molokai's west end make for some excellent kite flying. There are some fabulous, relatively deserted beaches including the longest beach in Hawaii. In ancient Hawaii, Molokai was known for its excellent kahunas , which kept invasion at bay for some time. In more recent history, Molokai is known for its leper colong on the Kalaupapa Peninsula. Tourists can head down the world's highest sea cliffs by mule to explore the settlement. For an interesting history of Hawaii and a lesson on macadamia nuts, Purdy's Farm offers tours of their orchards and tastings of all sorts of local fruits and macadamia nut products. The least expensive way to reach Molokai is by boat. The Molokai Princess runs a ferry across to Maui twice a day. The ferry offers the bonus of traveling with locals and outstanding scenery. The afternoon boat rolls in a sunset cruise. Hawaiian Air and Island Air offer scheduled air service to Molokai from Maui and Oahu. There are also several companies that charter puddle jumper planes to the island.
